Brent jumps above $104 after a report that the White House asked for Iran strike options before the midterms, a day after settling 20 cents above $100; a tanker is struck with casualties 51 miles north of Qatar; Fed minutes show most officials expect another hike by year end; and Paxos adds XRP to its brokerage.

Where things stand

Evidence through Oct 8, 9:15 AM ET

XRP spot: $1.41, Coinbase Exchange last trade, Thursday Oct 8, about 9:15 am ET; down about 4% from Wednesday's $1.46 Coinbase stamp, against a 24-hour low of $1.388, with Trading Economics showing $1.40 at about the same time. Evidence verified through Oct 8, 9:15 am ET.

All eight gauges hold. December Brent settled $100.20 Wednesday, 20 cents above the Macro Backdrop line, so the sub-$100 count stays at zero for a third session; a new tanker strike north of Qatar keeps the Hormuz count at zero; the 30-year par close of 5.67% keeps Bond Stress at its top level. Tap any gauge for its basis, criteria and math.

  • Yen Carry: worsening arrow holds. USD/JPY about 158.21 Thursday, 1.79 yen under the 160 close trigger.

Single-outlet reporting with no White House confirmation, but it moved the oil price two gauges are counting against.

The regulated back end behind several large platforms can now offer XRP, though no named partner has switched it on yet.

The guidance points at the Global Liquidity worsen test, which fires only on an actual second hike.

What changed

  • Fed minutes showed most participants saw another rate increase as likely appropriate by year end.
  • Paxos added XRP to its Crypto Brokerage, letting partner firms offer buying, selling, custody and transfers.
  • Houthi attacks on Abha and Riyadh airports killed three, the Saudi aviation authority said; diplomats in Riyadh sheltered Thursday.
  • XRP ETFs printed $0 on Oct 7 on SoSoValue and CoinGlass; the shell that becomes XRPN rose 30% to $25.01.

1Brent tops $104 on report of pre-midterm Iran strike options

High✓ Verified

December Brent settled $100.20 Wednesday, down 0.4%, and WTI settled $88.28, down 1.3% (CNBC). That is a third straight settle just above $100, so the Macro Backdrop sub-$100 count stays at zero. Overnight the tape reversed: Brent traded about $104.4 to $104.8 Thursday morning on Trading Economics, up more than 4%, and CBS News put it above $105 at one point.

The trigger was a report, not an event. The Atlantic, citing two administration officials, reported Wednesday that the White House asked the Pentagon to prepare strike options for a possible resumption of attacks on Iran before the Nov 3 midterms, with magnitude and targets still under discussion (CBS News). The White House did not immediately comment. Trump said Wednesday the war will end "very soon" and that oil will "drop like a rock" once it does (CBS News).

Counter-evidence: Gulf supply is recovering. Kpler said regional oil exports surpassed pre-war levels last week, and Rubio said almost as much oil is flowing as before the conflict (CBS News). Trading Economics also cites US Gulf of Mexico output shut in ahead of Tropical Storm Isaias, a supply factor unrelated to Iran. Thursday's move is not a settle and cannot touch the $90.00 Oil Shock improve marker or the $100.00 count until one prints.

2Paxos adds XRP to its crypto brokerage for partner firms

Medium✓ Verified

Paxos said Wednesday its Crypto Brokerage now supports XRP, letting partner firms offer XRP buying, selling, holding, deposits and withdrawals through the same regulated platform (crypto.news; TokenPost). Paxos operates as an OCC-supervised national trust bank.

What it does not say: that any named partner has switched XRP on. The XRP Ledger Foundation's repost listed PayPal, Venmo, Interactive Brokers, Charles Schwab and Mercado Libre as existing users of the Paxos back end, and that list is being read as those firms adding XRP. Each partner chooses its own asset menu, and TokenPost notes the update does not confirm XRP launches at any of them. Interactive Brokers already listed XRP in March 2025 (U.Today), so it would not be new there in any case.

Why it matters, and why it is modest: it lowers the integration cost for a fintech or broker that wants to offer XRP. That is distribution optionality, not demand: no partner announcement, volume figure or custody balance came with it. The desk keeps it out of the XRP demand read until a named partner goes live.

3Fed minutes: most see another hike likely by year end

High✓ Verified

Minutes of the Sept 15-16 FOMC meeting, released Wednesday, say "most participants assessed that another increase in the target range for the federal funds rate would likely be appropriate by year end," while stressing that decisions depend on incoming information (Federal Reserve). The September decision was unanimous, 12 to 0, raising the range to 3.75% to 4%.

The reasoning runs through oil. Participants said geopolitical developments had pushed up crude and refined fuel prices, and many judged that the longer energy prices stay elevated, the greater the risk of broader price pressures. Staff estimated August PCE inflation at 3.8% and core at 3.4% before a BEA methodology change.

This is guidance, not the trigger. Global Liquidity worsens to TIGHTENING only on an actual second 2026 hike; the next decision is Oct 28, with CPI on Oct 14 in between. The minutes record views from mid-September, before the 29,000 September payrolls print. A Waller remark favouring further hikes circulated Thursday on monitored X accounts; the desk did not locate it on the Fed's site in this run and does not rely on it.

4Tanker struck 51 nautical miles north of Qatar, casualties reported

High✓ Verified

UKMTO Warning 158-26 reports a tanker struck by multiple projectiles about 51 nautical miles north of Madinat ash Shamal, Qatar, at 1900 UTC Wednesday, with casualties reported; authorities are investigating and UKMTO marks the report verified (UKMTO). The warning does not name the vessel, flag or cargo, give a casualty count, or attribute the attack. The site falls inside Qatar's exclusive economic zone, and Qatar had not commented (ANI).

Location is the point. Recent strikes have clustered in and near the Strait of Hormuz; this one sits in the central Gulf, well to the west. A strike there widens the area shipowners and insurers must price, not just the strait itself.

What is not established: the ship's identity and who fired. A security-firm identification circulating on monitored X accounts has not been confirmed by UKMTO or an operator, so the desk does not name the vessel. Under the Hormuz improve criterion a new vessel strike means the five-session count cannot start; it stood at zero already, with no Reuters transit count located since Sept 24.

5Houthi airport attacks kill three in Saudi Arabia

Medium✓ Verified

Saudi Arabia's civil aviation authority said three people were killed and dozens wounded in Houthi attacks on two airports Tuesday and Wednesday: two dead and 28 injured at Abha, one dead and eight injured at King Khalid International in Riyadh (CBS News). The Houthis claimed another ballistic missile strike on the Riyadh airport Thursday, their third claim on it this week, and warned international airlines "for the last time" against flying through Saudi airspace. Diplomats in Riyadh were told to shelter in their embassies Thursday after repeated blasts, AFP reported (CBS News).

Oil link: so far the attacks hit airports, not export infrastructure. A Houthi warning to workers at Saudi oil facilities circulated Thursday only as a squawk of a statement; the statement text was not located, and no strike on a Saudi oil site is confirmed in this window. Saudi Arabia said Tuesday its East-West pipeline was carrying about 5.8 million bpd, and no update has followed.

6XRP ETFs print zero Wednesday; the week holds at $3.14 million

Medium✓ Verified

SoSoValue and CoinGlass both show $0 net flow for US spot XRP ETFs on Oct 7, with every fund flat (CoinGlass read from screenshots). The week of Oct 5 stands at $3.14 million against the $39.78 million reference, the first week of a new two-week count. With no outflow, the XRP Flows worsen test is not met either.

Net assets fell to $1.61 billion from $1.70 billion on SoSoValue, which is price, not redemptions: cumulative net inflow held at $1.79 billion and value traded was $39.51 million. Bitwise's fund is the largest at $598 million of net assets. The trackers' cumulative series still differ, $1.79 billion against $1.71 billion on CoinGlass, mostly on Grayscale's starting base.

7XRPN shell rebounds 30% ahead of Friday's expected close

Medium✓ Verified

The Armada shell that becomes Evernorth, already trading as XRPN, rebounded 30.26% to $25.01 Wednesday on 3.47 million shares after halving the day before, and traded at $26.68 after hours (StockAnalysis). The day's range ran from $19.50 to $28.63.

Nothing new from the issuer. No filing or Evernorth post has followed the Oct 6 Form 8-K, which put the expected close on or about Oct 9 and Nasdaq trading as Evernorth on or about Oct 12, both subject to closing conditions (SEC). Redemptions, final cash and the XRP count remain unreported, so the treasury figures are still projections. A shell price is not a disclosed XRP holding: at $25 it sits well above the roughly $10.58 it held before the vote, pricing expectations for the combined company.

830-year par yield closes at 5.67% as crypto slides again

Medium✓ Verified

Treasury's par curve put the 30-year at 5.67% and the 10-year at 5.28% Wednesday, up from 5.64% and 5.27%, while the 2-year eased to 4.77% (U.S. Treasury). The curve steepened again, 2s30s at 90 basis points from 85 (desk calc). Every 30-year close since Sept 28 sits above the 5.50% line. Thursday morning the 10-year traded near 5.31% on market quotes (Trading Economics).

Credit went the other way: the ICE BofA high-yield spread narrowed to 3.03% on Oct 6 from 3.12% (FRED), still well wide of the 2.68% Sept 18 level the Yen Carry improve test is measured against.

Crypto fell again. Coinbase Exchange showed XRP at $1.41 against a 24-hour open of $1.4625 and a low of $1.388; Trading Economics showed bitcoin near $82,400 and ether near $2,530, with US index futures lower after the Iran report. USD/JPY sat about 158.21, barely changed, and the JGB 10-year eased to about 3.086%.

9XRPL: Permission Delegation reaches its activation window

Medium✓ Verified

XRPScan's API shows PermissionDelegationV1_1 at 28 of 33 validators against a threshold of 26, with majority held since Sept 24 at 21:25 UTC, putting its earliest activation at Oct 8 about 21:25 UTC (desk calc, two weeks after majority). BatchV1_1 shows 28 of 33 and fixBatchV1_2 33 of 33, with earliest activation Oct 9 about 14:46 and 14:12 UTC. The validator count reads 33 with a threshold of 26, from 34 and 27 Wednesday; an XRPScan post on monitored X accounts noted two validators moving in and out of the Negative UNL overnight.

An amendment counts as live only once it is enabled on ledger; majority can still be lost before the window closes. Neither moves any gauge. The Lending Protocol (XLS-66) sits at 15 of 33 and LendingProtocolV1_1 at 14, with no majority.
